Stress and anxiety in day-to-day life can really debilitating. We all have tolerance levels for different aspects of our lives – whether that be a threshold for stress, social interaction, or family responsibilities etc. EVERYBODY deals with life pressures differently, and it is important not to judge yourself based on your personal tolerance levels. Trusting yourself to know what you can handle is key, right up there with the sometimes elusive ‘self-love’.
There are many useful techniques out there for managing stress and anxiety, but I believe there is one HUGE thing that you can do that will make all of the difference. It is also the hardest thing to actually implement!
Please note that I am in no way providing medical advice, this article is aimed at helping people manage everyday stress and anxiety, please seek medical attention if you are really in a bad place and do not think you can manage on your own!
The One Thing
Now, that first step I hinted at...
I will start off by stating that everything in YOUR life is YOUR choice! Take the power back & have a real hard look at how you’re living it.
If there is one big thing in your life that is causing mounting pressure and stress, this can be so detrimental. It can also lower your threshold coping levels for every other aspect of your life. Are you giving yourself the love and support that you need? You deserve to be happy!
Do you have a job you hate?
Are you stuck in an unhealthy relationship?
Unfortunately, if this is the major cause of your stress and anxiety, then you are the only one with the power to change it. If there is a way to fix the situation, then now is the perfect time to start working on that! If you find yourself struggling to see a solution, then it may be time to consider removing yourself from the unhealthy situation altogether.
I can tell you from experience that this is not easy. A little over a year ago now I decided to leave a Veterinary Medicine degree after 3 (out of 5) years. I’m not a stranger to hard work (having already completed a B. Env. Science), and sadly have also had more than my fair share of difficult life experiences - in fact I thought I could tackle anything else that came my way in life and was honestly shocked by how overwhelming everyday pressure and stress can be. This particular course was killing me, I was fast becoming a different person - someone who I didn’t like - and I can couldn’t pull myself out. I was experiencing many internal conflicts, my intuition was basically yelling at me - something needed to change. It did take me months of fighting with myself before I finally decided to put myself first and leave the unhealthy situation, but at some point you have to trust your intuition and just do it.
It’s scary of course - what else will you do in life? Sometimes we have a tunnel vision about what our life 'should' look like, but in reality there are so many options and opportunities in this world - so many people, so many jobs, so many careers, and so many ways to create a happy life for yourself. Moving forward is always better than being stuck and unhappy.
This is by no means an encouragement to never work hard for what you want in life. I'm speaking about that feeling you have hanging over you when a situation doesn’t align with your soul, and there is a part of you screaming to ‘get out’ everyday! We only live once (unless you believe in reincarnation!), so make it worthwhile!!
